The Greek Forum of Refugees has joined more than 60 refugee-led, Afghan diaspora, and European civil society organisations in signing a joint statement expressing serious concern over reports that the European Union intends to host Taliban representatives in Brussels to discuss deportations to Afghanistan.
The statement warns that such engagement risks contributing to the political normalisation of the Taliban at a time when Afghanistan continues to face a severe human rights and humanitarian crisis. It highlights the ongoing violations of fundamental rights and freedoms, particularly against women and girls, and raises concerns about the safety and legality of returns to Afghanistan under the current circumstances.
The signatory organisations call on the European Commission, EU Member States, and the European External Action Service to reject any cooperation arrangements that could facilitate deportations to Afghanistan, uphold the principle of non-refoulement, and ensure that any engagement concerning Afghanistan remains firmly grounded in human rights, accountability, and international protection obligations.
Human rights, dignity, and protection must come before deportation policies.
