The Greek Forum of Refugees, along with 35 other organisations, signed a Joint Letter to the Greek Ministry of Migration calling for the immediate reinstatement of interpretation services for asylum seekers in Greece.
Since the beginning of last May, interpretation services at the competent asylum authorities have been suspended due to prolonged delays in payments from the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. This provision of interpretation services to asylum and reception services in Greece has been severely disrupted, violating the fundamental rights of refugees and asylum seekers, such as access to the asylum process and health services.
The interpretation is funded by the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). Despite the availability of funds, significant delays in renewing the contract with the interpretation service provider have led to months of service interruption and disruption.
Points of Concern:
-
- Restrictions on access to asylum leaves people in limbo without protection
-
- Lack of access to healthcare and further isolation
We urge the recipients of this letter to recognize the seriousness of the situation and to take all necessary measures to ensure that the needs of asylum seekers for access to interpretation services are respected!
