Yesterday, 21 September 2026, the Greek Forum of Refugees (GFR), represented by its Communications Officer, Royeen Muhammadi, participated in a meeting of the Hellenic Police Working Group with civil society organisations and human rights bodies. The meeting took place at the General Police Directorate of Attica (GADA), following an invitation from the Attica Department for Combating Racist Violence.
The discussion focused on improving the police response to incidents of racist violence and hate crimes, protecting victims and strengthening reporting procedures. Participants also discussed proposed improvements to the relevant police handbook, and information materials for communities were presented.
Despite the significant progress made, serious challenges in tackling racist violence remain unresolved. These require substantive action by the responsible authorities, particularly the Hellenic Police.
We welcome the initiative to establish regular, structured dialogue with civil society organisations. However, we consider it essential that this dialogue lead to concrete action and more effective protection for victims.
The lived experiences and knowledge of refugee and migrant communities themselves provide valuable insights for improving policing practices and building trust. Their meaningful participation, alongside civil society organisations, is essential to tackling racist violence effectively.
As the Greek Forum of Refugees, we will continue to engage actively and responsibly in this process, bringing forward the experiences, needs and proposals of our member communities.
Everyone has the right to protection from racist violence, and the responsible authorities have a duty to uphold that right. Trust is built through cooperation, accountability and, above all, action.
