Shipwrecks in Samos: Loss of Lives and Untold Stories of Refugees

Two bodies, a woman and a man, were recovered from the sea area of Nisakia, north of Samos, after a boat carrying refugees – migrants sank and people fell into the sea. At the same time, two more dead refugees have been added to the list of victims of deadly shipwrecks that continue to grow by the day. This new tragedy occurred a few minutes after midnight on 20-21 October, when a boat carrying 24 refugees overturned in the same area and all the passengers were found at sea.

These are just two of the many untold stories of people risking everything to reach a safer country. Behind the numbers and the facts, there are lives, dreams, families. Many stories will never be heard. Their journey to safety is often incomplete, but humanity must not close its eyes.

These people are not just victims of statistics, but bearers of stories that remain unknown. The need for change is more urgent than ever, as Europe’s borders continue to become killing fields for innocent people and systematic deportations increase.

By reporting such tragedies, we are called upon to awaken our society, to demand a more humane approach and to demand safe and legal routes for those forced to flee their homelands. We must give a voice to those who will never be able to speak again.
