The rescue of 589 applicants for international protection was completed with success. The GFR thanks the volunteers and the organizations for their contribution
The ship with the 589 people, including 250 women and children, had started from the Turkish coast. Nine days later, and after sailing with no purpose and clear destination so as in a great danger too, was rescued by the Greek authorities. According to the preliminary information the survivors come from different countries as Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. 60 people diagnosed with health problems, among them a pregnant woman, who was transferred to the closest hospital. The rest of the travelers were transferred to the Stadium of the city Ierapetra, in Crete.
It is remarkable to be mentioned the great contribution of the volunteers and the response of the local people so as the effective response of the involved organizations and institutions.
