Refugees still remain people with rights
We, as the Greek Forum of Refugees, want to express our deep concern regarding the situation handling at the Greek borders since the latest turn of events that begun on the 27th of February. We strongly urge all parties involved to prioritize the safety of refugees and all civilians in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and EU Refugee Law. We advice all parties involved to exercise self-restrain and keep composure in order to restrain the intensity of the situation at the EU-Turkey borders.
We see the need to remind all authorities and actors in Greece and across Europe not to treat refuges as invaders or as a threat but as group of people in need of basic human rights like safety, shelter and food. The refugees are victims of failed policies, economic interests and of geopolitical strategies to name a few.
People trying to cross the Greek borders right now are caught up in the tide of a misinformation that claims the borders of Europe to be now open. Thousand have, in desperation, embarked on a very dangerous journey in the hope of a new beginning for their lives.
We, the Greek Forum of Refugees, immediately acted upon the leak of misinformation and launched a campaign to tackle the fake news. In order to deescalate the rising tension and prevent further loss of lives we are spreading information in the languages of the people at risk.
Raising awareness on the realities among the people at risk but also among actors involved is of primary concern right now. The recipient of refugees and integration is an ongoing manner yet to be strategically settled.
This is the reason we are inviting the relevant actors of the Greek state and the civil society to become allies in our endeavor. The Greek Forum of Refugees will continue raising awareness in several languages and will launch a series of campaigns to bring together all relevant Authorities of the Greek State, the Ministry of Migration Policy, the Ministry of Citizen Protection, as well as effected communities, with the sole objective of undertaking institutional initiatives and establishing a stable and secure communication between all parties involved.
We also want to draw attention to the extremely worrying situation in the islands of the Northeastern Aegean, and we call on the Greek government to safeguard the rule of law, taking essential steps to reduce the tension that has risen and to prevent the phenomena of vigilantism and arbitration that have already gained severe momentum. The Greek authorities and the relevant parties must guarantee the safety of the people and respect human rights.
The Greek Forum of Refugees was founded by refugee communities who gathered together in order to address the problems they are facing in their new host society by providing solutions and suggestions for a harmonious coexistence. We strive for an inclusive society that is just for all.
Refugees are not invaders and this is something we want to remind both to Greece and the other EU member states.
It is about time that everyone takes the responsibility that lies with them.
Refugees still remain people with rights.
