The position of the Greek Forum of Refugees on the events that took place over the last days in Diavata has been clear and consistent from the very beginning. We can only express our opposition to such mobilizations, as the dangers of such an undertaking were more than obvious. Besides, the experience obtained over the last few years confirms that such actions could, even, cost human lives.
The so-called HOPE Caravan was organized on the basis of:
- the desperation of refugees and immigrants living in the camps and other shelters and their hope for a better life, but also,
- the insecurity and the fear that refugees and immigrants feel due to the lack of valid information as far as their present and their future is concerned, a situation that makes them even more vulnerable to different types of exploitation and fake news.
Furthermore, we must underline that the living conditions in the camps and other shelters are very difficult and the situation is very fragile. We must all understand that this movement was the people’s hopeless effort in the search for a better life.
We urge every relevant stakeholder to get involved with the deescalation of this crisis, in the context of respecting and preserving the value of the human life, in order to avoid the worst.
Therefore, we call every relevant party to make a decisive contribution to the effective resolution of the problems faced by refugees and immigrants and the proper and prompt information for the issues that concern them.
We are, also, obliged to point out that such movements are most likely to be repeated in the future. As long as this endless situation continues to cause fear, insecurity and suffocation to the people.
