Who we Are

The Greek Forum of Refugees (GFR) is a network of refugee and , individuals and professionals working to support and advocate for the rights of asylum seekers, refugees, and stateless persons in Greece and empower Communities though workshops on employability and sustainability

Today, eleven (11) formal Communities are members of the GFR with several unofficial ones also cooperating with us. The GFR’s legal status is that of an association and was created by concerned individuals of refugee background in 2012, though it was conceived as an idea since 2010

It was a very early step towards Self-Advocacy and had a clear perspective on promoting an essential inclusion and joint participation of the refugee and the local population

The Board of Directors is composed of people of a refugee background

Our Mission

The GFR’s mission is that of a holistic inclusion and the active participation of refugees in the host society

The term “holistic” covers both social and political inclusion, for we consider refugees as active citizens who have rights, as well as obligations, in an inclusive and democratic society

In order to realize our mission we are engaged in several different activities such as

Advocating for an effective inclusion and the active participation of refugees in the host society

Defending the rights of asylum seekers, refugees and people affected by statelessness in several fields (asylum procedures, employment, education etc.)

Empowering communities and individuals by promoting self advocacy and effective communication through workshops, seminars and participation in round tables with relevant stakeholders

Empowering women by encouraging them to use their skills, enhancing them at the same time through workshops and seminars in order to become sustainable and help them in acquiring a job position

Providing proper information to asylum seekers and refugees concerning their rights and obligations

Raising awareness on important issues (e.g. statelessness) and on active participation for an inclusive and democratic society

Mediating between the communities and relevant stakeholders enhancing, in this way, networking in a local, national and European level
