The 2020 has been a difficult year. The pandemic affected all of us. Some of us have been affected more, passing through a difficult time. At this moment it is essential that we leave no one behind. We need to support once again the people who need us the most.

Refugee communities in Athens, Greece, are in a very difficult situation. They are in the verge of bankruptcy due to the pandemic lockdown, as they are not able to serve their needs. They are not able to pay for their office’s rent, the main bills and very basic expenses they need to cover in order to remain accessible and in the services of asylum seekers, refugees, migrants and stateless people.

The communities is the core of our association, the Greek Forum of Refugees, operating as the rallying point for every person with a refugee or migrant background.

They play a major role in informing the people of the procedures they need to follow in terms of their reception and integration into the Greek society. They offer social support, language courses and organizing cultural events that contribute to the creation of a common ground with the host society, promoting the mutual acceptance and respect. They advocate for their rights and obligations in the local, national, European and even the International level, empowering the voice of the voiceless people. Making visible the problems of the invisible people. The organized communities with a statute, an office and members of their association, work as a positive example for the refugees that are struggling to address their issues. The communities indicate the ways that the problems can be addressed collectively in order to ensure the improvement of the people’s quality of life in the new host society.

If we are to move on with our cause in the battle for the refugees’ and migrants’ integration into the Greek society, we need to keep empowering the refugee and the migrant communities. We need to remain alive, open and accessible. If we are to keep fighting for a better present and an even better future, we need your support, now more than ever.
