AFGHANISTAN: A year after the return of the Taliban. The exodus and the suffering of the Afghan people.

A year after the dramatic events that followed the western forces’ withdrawal from Afghanistan and the violent seizure of power by the Taliban, the Greek Forum of Refugees and the Afghan community of Migrants and Refugees, in cooperation with the European Council for Refugees and Exiles, organise an informative event to raise awareness over the problems and the challenges that Afghan people face in their daily reality in Greece and Europe.

-In Serafio City of Athens Conference Center, Ehelidon 19 and Pireus 144 (near Kerameikos metro station).

The speakers will address the audience in both Greek & English.

At the same time, the Afghan community of Migrants and Refugees in Greece prepare lots of surprises for the audience, with several cultural and social events.

SCHEDULE

17:15 Opening Speech by the President of the Greek Forum of Refugees’ Board of Directors, Mr Jean – Didier Totow Tom – Ata.

17:30 – 18:30 1st panel discussion: The situation in Afghanistan

Mr Yonous Muhammadi, Director of the Greek Forum of Refugees, will coordinate the panel discussion.

Speakers

  1. Nazifa Yusofi Bek, Former Afghan Parliamentarian and Chair of “Afghan Women Parliamentarians and Leaders Network (AWPLN) founded in Greece.
  2. Filio Kontrafouri, Al Jazeera Journalist, correspondent in Afghanistan from 2005 to August 2021, with plenty collaborations with international and Greek media agencies.
  3. Tahmina Salik, Co – Founder and Director of NGO PAREI, a non – profit organisation working to eliminate poverty, promoting gender equality and creating better opportunities for Afghan people. She leads the Danish – Afghan women and diaspora forum (DAKDIF) and she advocates for women’s rights on Denmark and Afghanistan.
  4. Dr. Homaira Rezaie, Chair of Hazara Committee in the UK and Expert on the women’s and minority rights in Afghanistan.

15 minutes of Q & A between the speakers and the audience.

18:30 – 18:45 Coffee Break

18:45 – 19:45 2nd panel discussion: Afghan asylum seekers and difficulties of accessing to international protection

Dr Angeliki Dimitriadi, Research Fellow at the Global Public Policy institute (GPPi) focusing on migration management policies and migration governance in the EU, will coordinate the panel discussion.

Speakers

  1. Reshad Jalali, Policy Officer of the European Council for Refugees and Exiles (ECRE).
  2. Raihana Gangi, Vice – President of the Afghan community of Migrants and Refugees in Greece.
  3. Lefteris Papagiannakis, Director of the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR).
  4. Minos Mouzourakis, Legal Officer of the Refugee Aegean Support (RSA).

15 minutes of Q & A between the speakers and the audience.

20:00 – 21:00 Buffet and side events by the Afghan community of Migrants and Refugees in Greece.
