A Perilous Escape
When in 2016 the EU closed the borders and set the deal with Turkey, Patras started buzzing once more despite the huge risks implicit in this route. There has been a gradual increase in the number of people taking this way-out but as Arshad from Afghanistan said “Everything is dangerous,” “You have to go through all the suffering to get into a better place. So this is why everybody is trying.” This is only one more of the horrible consequences of the EU migration policies which put the lives of the people last. Let’s start thinking about human beings.
The migrants bolted across a street and clambered over a fence into the Greek port at Patras, scouting around for trucks to stow away in.
Dozens at a time scaled a 2-km stretch of fence one afternoon last week, playing cat-and-mouse with police officers who pushed them back only for the men to try again hours later.
