Refugees: arrests and lack of protection
Given the unstable situation that we are dealing with, concerning the refugee crisis, we want to report the dysfunction of the Asylum Service, who leads to immediate arrest and imprisonment of the refugees. This aggravates further the already tensed atmosphere.
Recent example is the arrest and imprisonment of Masoud Afshar, 52 years old from Afghanistan. Mr. Masoud Afshar had to move from the Refugee Camp of Schisto to Thriasio General Hospital. After the first aid that has been provided to him, he has been hospitalized, guarded by police officers that have intervened, after they have been informed by the hospital administration, that validating documents of Mr. Masoud had expired.
We want to demonstrate that Masoud Afshar, like other thousands of refugees, keep trying in a daily basis to contact the Asylum Service through Skype, but all that effort has been proved fruitless and with really bad results. The refugees, who have suffered already enough and continue to suffer daily, are being threatened with arrest and imprisonment because of non-existent access to asylum procedures. This situation is very serious.
These refugees, their families and their children, are being hosted in several camps, managed by Greek Authorities. In many of these Camps there is lack of Asylum Service or even internet access in order for them to call the Asylum Service through Skype, possibly in vain. This issue is not only very serious but also absurd. We demand from the competent authorities the settlement of this issue.
